All in all a really worthwhile trip, which was thoroughly enjoyed by myself. Wildlife in Somerset are knowledgeable, respectful of the land and above all clearly passionate about the local wildlife. I highly recommend to anyone interested in wildlife.

Our evening started with a walk along the riverbank where we saw swallow and sand piper. We waited for the ever elusive kingfisher but as the sun started to set we decided to move on.

A short drive took us to further into farmland where we saw rabbit, kestrel,  buzzard, linnet, goldfinch, stopping briefly to see a dozen swan fly right over as they were preparing to settle for the evening on the river.  We continued to search for little owl whilst being greeting by some very friendly cows. A further walk along a different stretch of riverbank followed, looking for barn owl where we saw reed bunting, goldfinch and more swans.

Returning to our second stop we were once again met by the cows, but alias no little owl. Decision made. As the light began to disappear we drove back to our first stop. Within minutes we could hear a tawny owl, barn owl and a little owl, when the little owl decided to reveal itself in the days last minutes of light. The evening finished with a mystery bird flying overhead which turned out to be a nightjar where in the distance a fox could be heard barking.

We have just got back from a four night stay in Somerset and can’t wait to go back! One of our days was spent with Stephen  who Wildlife Somerset. He is a great chap with a wealth of knowledge about the area and the abundant wildlife living there.

We really wanted to see some Cranes and Stephen took us onto the Somerset Moors and the most likely areas to see them. He certainly got it right as we were amazed to see between thirty and forty of these super birds along with a Kingfisher, Kestrels, Buzzards, Marsh Harrier, Hen Harrier, Linnets, Goldfinches, Winchats, Stonechats, Goldfinches, Deer and more that I have probably forgotten!

Thank you very much Stephen from me and Cath, keep up your great work and we hope to see you again soon!
